​Meta has received approval from the European Union's data regulator to train its artificial intelligence models using publicly shared content from adult users on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. This includes posts, comments, and interactions with Meta's AI assistant. However, private messages and data from users under 18 remain excluded. Users will be notified and can opt out via an accessible form. This decision follows a previous pause in AI training due to privacy concerns raised by advocacy groups and the Irish Data Protection Commission. Meta asserts that this approach aligns with practices of other tech companies like Google and OpenAI, who also utilize public data for AI training.
