The government abandoned the name, but the mission continued. According to Whitney, Peter Thiel, an early Facebook investor, was already turning government surveillance into private business. His company, Palantir, built a system that let intelligence agencies track people in ways Congress had rejected. The public was outraged when the government tried to do it. When Silicon Valley did the same thing, no one paid attention. The biggest tech companies didn’t grow on their own. They had help. Their founders had ties. Their funding had sources.
