Mexican authorities seized 300 GPUs from a hidden crypto mine linked to cartel funding, exposing a growing illicit mining scheme.

Mexican authorities have lately busted a hidden crypto mine deep in the mountains of Puebla. Agents hauled out 300 GPUs, 80 medium-voltage terminals, and eight satellite antennas.

The site sat in Tlaola, well off any main road. Investigators say the operation was tapping power straight from a nearby hydroelectric dam. It’s the fourth mining farm found in that area since early 2025.

Reuters broke the story, linking the setup to organized crime groups using mining to launder money.

Puebla Crypto Farm Signals Cartel Sophistication

The building sat off a quiet gravel road in the Sierra Norte mountains. 

As per the report, locals said the mechanical hum could be heard from a kilometer away, well before anyone spotted the structure itself. That noise, paired with unusually high power draw for such a remote spot, drew attention from investigators.

Security analyst David Saucedo said the setup points to a new level of technical skill among criminal groups in Mexico. He noted that running an operation like this needs both expertise and serious financing, the kind only a major cartel could provide.
