$31M Transfer From a 2013 Wallet Highlights a Growing Pattern of Dormant Bitcoin Holders Moving Coins

Bitcoin wallet inactive since 2013 moved 500 BTC, equivalent to $31.3 million; the transaction was detected by on-chain tracker Whale Alert on Monday, August 3.

The funds, which were worth approximately $500,000 when they last moved more than 12 years ago, were transferred entirely to a new address. On-chain analytics platform Lookonchain noted that the move may have been prompted by security concerns stemming from the hack of Coldcard, a popular Bitcoin-only hardware wallet.

Since July 30, multiple attackers have stolen thousands of BTC from wallets generated with Coldcard, exploiting a vulnerability dating back to March 2021. According to Galaxy Research, cumulative losses amount to approximately $130 million in BTC.

The case of wallet 18TExP is not unique: data from CryptoQuant shows a notable spike in dormant coin movement within the same time window.
