Scammers in Florida have allegedly drained $2.2 million from elderly victims across the country after pretending to be federal agents.
Prosecutors charged Chinese nationals Yongbo Li, Huashan Lu and Yuxiang Zhao, who are living illegally in the US, with conspiracy to commit mail fraud after they collected cash, checks and money orders sent to post office boxes in the Orlando area, reports the Orlando Sentinel.
Authorities say they are looking to arrest three others in China following months of investigation by the Orlando Police Department and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
The scammers allegedly reached out to victims via phone calls, emails and pop-up messages, telling them that their personal and financial information had been exposed. The fraudsters also allegedly urged the victims to keep the matter secret.
The thieves allegedly directed victims, mostly over age 65, to mail payments to shell companies so they could supposedly resolve the fabricated issues.
At least 28 people lost large sums, including individual amounts reaching $240,000, $171,000 and $150,000.
