BRICS Pushes Dollar Alternative With CBDCs, Pix and New Payment Rails

The BRICS dollar alternative is moving from talk to real infrastructure this year, as members connect digital currencies, link payment networks and draft a gold-backed settlement token to cut reliance on the dollar and SWIFT. BRICS CBDCs are being lined up for interconnection, UnionPay has been plugged into Brazil’s Pix, Argentina extended its currency swap with Beijing to 2031, and a new settlement token is on the desks of central bankers across the bloc.

BRICS CBDCs And Payment Rails Reshape The Dollar Alternative

The BRICS payment system keeps growing in pieces, not all at once. Instead of one shared currency, members are wiring together tools they already have. The European Central Bank’s June 2026 report said this points to a fragmenting monetary system, with more countries building out BRICS payment rails to move money outside dollar-based channels.

India Pushes To Connect BRICS Digital Currencies

On January 19, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India proposed linking the digital currencies of BRICS central banks at this year’s summit, which India is chairing. Nobody is planning a common currency here; the goal is to connect what exists, from India’s e-rupee to Brazil’s Drex, even though none of the founding states has a fully working digital currency yet and all five are still piloting theirs. An April 2026 study called interoperability, not a shared currency, the most realistic path for BRICS de-dollarization.
