BTC/USDT Explained: What the Trading Pair Means and How It Works

BTC/USDT is a cryptocurrency trading pair that prices one Bitcoin in units of USDT. BTC is the base asset and USDT is the quote asset, so a BTC/USDT price of 100,000 means that buying 1 BTC requires 100,000 USDT. It is an exchange between two crypto assets, not a direct conversion of Bitcoin into U.S. dollars.
That distinction affects how prices are read, which asset is spent on a purchase, and the risks a trader holds after a sale. USDT is designed to maintain a value relative to the U.S. dollar, but it remains a stablecoin rather than cash itself.
BTC/USDT: BTC Is the Base Asset and USDT Is the Quote Asset
Every trading pair has two sides. The asset on the left is conventionally called the base asset; the asset on the right is the quote asset. In BTC/USDT, Bitcoin is the base asset and Tetherโs USDT is the quote asset.
The displayed price answers a specific question: how much USDT is needed for one BTC? A quote of 100,000 BTC/USDT means 1 BTC is priced at 100,000 USDT. A quote of 50,000 would mean 1 BTC is priced at 50,000 USDT. The convention is set out in market documentation cited by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
