MetaMask Becomes Independent Company as Consensys Splits Business in Two

Consensys Software Inc. said on September 9 that it plans to split into two independently operated companies, rebranding the existing company as MetaMask while creating a new infrastructure business that will retain the Consensys name. The planned separation, confirmed by Consensys, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The move separates MetaMask’s consumer-facing, self-custodial finance operation from the company’s Ethereum protocol and institutional blockchain infrastructure businesses.
MetaMask takes the consumer mandate
Under the plan, the current Consensys Software entity will become MetaMask. The renamed company will focus on consumer self-custodial finance, positioning the wallet brand as the standalone consumer platform in the group’s new structure.
MetaMask has operated as part of Consensys Software before the announced restructuring. The corporate change would make it one of the two independently run companies rather than a business within the existing Consensys organisation.
