Washington State Women Orchestrate Identity Theft and Bank Fraud Operation, Hitting Over 250 People

A pair of Washington women have admitted to running an identity theft and bank fraud operation that hit more than 250 victims over multiple years.

The DOJ says Emily Vranic, 34, and Heather Marquis, 37, of Bremerton used stolen mail to activate fraudulent credit cards, open new accounts and seize control of existing bank accounts.

One victim faced $110,000 in unauthorized transfers that could have climbed past $170,000 without bank intervention.

Prosecutors say the pair repeatedly rerouted mail through third-party addresses and even used victim funds to cover their own mortgage payments.

Vranic drew a three-year prison term while Marquis received 31 months, followed by three years of supervised release for each.

Says First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd,

“These defendants attempted to steal at least $330,000 from their victims over a three-year period – ID theft and bank fraud was their ‘job,’ and for at least 15 victims they were all too successful.”

Marquis agreed to pay $102,784 in restitution while Vranic’s restitution hearing remains scheduled for October of 2026.
