What Is a Politically Exposed Person (PEP), and Why Does It Matter in Crypto?

A Politically Exposed Person, or PEP, is someone who holds or has held a prominent public position. Think heads of state, senior government officials, judges, military leaders, or executives at state-owned companies. The term also covers their close family members and business associates.
PEPs are not criminals. Most have done nothing wrong. But their public power creates a real risk: itโs easier for them to receive bribes, misuse public funds, or launder money without getting caught. Thatโs why banks and crypto exchanges treat PEPs as higher-risk customers and watch their transactions more closely.

In crypto, a PEP is the same type of person: someone in or connected to public office who now holds or trades crypto assets. Exchanges and wallet providers are expected to identify these users during onboarding, the same way traditional banks do.
