Six hours separate New York and Berlin, and the practical effect is that the two continents' prime-time sport does not overlap at all. European football finishes as American sport begins. A bettor following both is not managing a busy calendar; they are managing two calendars that never share an evening.

When Things Actually Start

Converted into both zones, the pattern is immediately clear.

• Premier League Saturday 3pm UK — 10am on the US East Coast

• Champions League 9pm CET — 3pm ET, mid-afternoon in New York

• NFL Sunday early window, 1pm ET — 6pm UK, 7pm CET

• NFL Sunday night, 8:20pm ET — 1:20am UK, 2:20am CET

• Typical NBA tip-off, 7:30pm ET — 12:30am UK, 1:30am CET

• MLB postseason evening games — broadly the same overnight window as the NBA

The first two rows are comfortable for a European and awkward for an American. The last three reverse it exactly. There is no arrangement that makes both convenient, because the zones do not permit one.
