Connecticut Bookkeeper Admits To Stealing Nearly $754,000 From Law Firm: Report

A bookkeeper at a Connecticut law firm has admitted stealing nearly $754,000 from the business and its owner over more than a decade.
Heather Murdock, 58, of Ellington entered her guilty plea in New Haven federal court to charges of bank fraud and tax evasion, reports CT Insider.
She served as bookkeeper and office manager at the Hartford firm known in court documents as Firm A.
Prosecutors said she generated hundreds of checks made out to herself using the firm’s software and forged the owner’s signature on them.
She then altered bookkeeping entries to disguise the payments as going to real vendors, totaling about $578,279.
The scheme also involved taking $175,559 in cash from rental properties owned by the firm’s principal.
To hide those thefts, she moved funds between accounts and falsified records in the system.
She failed to report any of the stolen money as income on her taxes, underreporting in 2011 and 2012 and skipping filings from 2013 through 2022.
This left her owing $225,991 in unpaid federal taxes.
