Crypto Wrench Attacks Cause Over $30M Losses in H1 as France Tops

Chainalysis reports that violent crypto attacks have stolen more than $30 million during the first half of 2026. The total already exceeds half of 2025’s record $58 million loss. Meanwhile, home invasions, kidnappings, and attacks on relatives have become more prominent across reported cases.

France now leads in publicly known incidents after a sharp increase in crypto attack incidents that began in 2025.

Violent Crypto Attack Incidents Accelerate in 2026

Chainalysis recorded 12 successful payments from 46 violent theft attempts through late June. That equals a 26% success rate, compared with 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024. However, attempted extractions show a larger financial footprint than completed crypto attacks.

Reported demands, coerced transfers, frozen funds, and recovered assets reached about $107 million during 2026’s first half. Comparable totals reached roughly $180 million in 2025 and $316 million in 2024. Chainalysis also says reported cases likely undercount the actual number of attacks.
