Hyderabad police book Meta India head over 'digitally altered' depictions of Modi

Indian authorities have stirred up international drama with their decision to build a criminal case against the local head of Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta (NASDAQ: META), Arun Srinivas. The Hyderabad cybercrime police named Srinivas as part of its investigation into allegedly doctored videos and images of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that users circulated on their platforms during the student protests that recently sparked in the country.

The case against Srinivas and Meta’s India unit, and several Facebook and Instagram accounts, is not New Delhi’s first attempt to put pressure or direct the world’s largest social platforms over the kind of content that users post.

In just this year, the Modi government has expanded its content moderation net to influencers and podcasters, while also slashing the window for platforms to act on blocking orders from 36 hours to three.

India also spent much of 2025 in legal bouts with Musk’s X, asking courts to settle content moderation disputes with the social media platform.
