Onchain security firm Blockaid revealed that during the first half of 2026, the crypto ecosystem lost more than $1 billion to hacks. The report, published Tuesday, highlights that the period recorded the highest number of verified exploit incidents in the sector’s history, exceeding in just six months the total number of breaches recorded throughout all of 2025.

The report emphasizes that actors linked to North Korea led the financial losses through social engineering and multisig key compromises, highlighting massive attacks on protocols like Drift and KelpDAO. At the network level, Ethereum and Solana led the damage, accumulating $332 million and $326 million stolen respectively, driven by smart contract exploits on Ethereum and signer infrastructure flaws on Solana.

Looking ahead to the second half of 2026, the industry faces an increasing sophistication of cyber threats. Blockaid projects a significant increase in breaches targeting artificial intelligence agents and autonomous solutions, which will urgently force projects to reinforce their code audits and custody setups.
