Cloudflare Gives AI Agents Programmable Wallets for API Payments

Cloudflare’s payment layer for machine-to-machine calls is taking shape. On 2026-08-06, ai|expert reported that the company’s Monetization Gateway opens per-request billing for agent calls, with payment checks at the edge via the x402 protocol and an aim of sub-second stablecoin settlement across APIs, MCP tools, datasets and web pages.

Cloudflare first announced the Monetization Gateway on 2026-07-01, describing a service that lets site and API owners charge for any resource behind Cloudflare by returning an HTTP 402 payment challenge and settling in stablecoins over x402 (Cloudflare Blog).

The direct consequence: developers can gate specific resources and charge per request, and Cloudflare is signaling an agent-native future. “Soon they will carry wallets and buy what they need without a person in the loop,” the company wrote, adding that the gateway verifies payment at the edge before forwarding requests to origin (Cloudflare Blog).
