The Dutch central bank moved 86 metric tonnes of gold from the United States and Canada to London between March and August 2026. The relocation did not reduce the Netherlands' total gold holdings. Instead, the move changed where those reserves were stored.
Around 59 tonnes were sold in New York and repurchased in London. More than 27 tonnes were also moved from North America to the Netherlands before being transferred to London. De Nederlandsche Bank said the changes were intended to improve access to its gold during a potential crisis. London now holds a larger share of the Netherlands' gold reserves. The city remains one of the world's major gold trading centers, with established infrastructure for storing, trading, and settling physical bullion.
