Meta To Pay Up To $17,100,000,000, Add Child Safety Limits On Instagram And Facebook After States Claim Addictive Designs
Meta is settling claims from dozens of states by agreeing to pay up to $17.1 billion and implement major safety changes on its platforms.
In 2023, New York Attorney General Letitia James joined 32 other state attorneys general in suing Meta, alleging that the company deliberately designed features that could harm children and teenagers while encouraging them to spend more time on its social media platforms.
In a landmark settlement filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, Meta agrees to pay at least $12.1 billion to a coalition of states. If other major social media companies such as TikTok and YouTube reach similar settlements with states, the amount will increase to $17.1 billion
The social media giant will also add daily time limits, nighttime blocks, and other child-safety measures on Instagram and Facebook.
New York will receive between $819 million and $1.15 billion for mental health services, school programs, and education initiatives.
New York Attorney General James highlighted the agreementโs impact.
