Mexico Uncovers Hidden Crypto Mine in Remote Puebla Mountains

Mexican authorities uncovered a suspected illegal cryptocurrency mining operation hidden in the mountains of Tlaola, Puebla. Investigators found 300 GPUs, 80 medium-voltage terminals and eight satellite antennas, while the site is being examined over possible links to illicit finance and electricity theft.

The operation was located in the Sierra Norte region near a hydroelectric system, where authorities are investigating whether power was being taken unlawfully from a nearby dam. The discovery is the fourth crypto mining site found in the area since early 2025, highlighting growing scrutiny of how organized crime may use mining infrastructure, although no cartel involvement has been formally established.

Mexico’s federal attorney’s office declined to comment because the investigation remains active. Authorities are also working with neighboring states to determine whether more hidden mining operations exist, making the scope of the network and the source of its financing the main questions still unresolved.
