I bought 8× NVIDIA Tesla V100 16GB GPUs and built a massive GPU server with one goal: get it running on Vast.ai and see if these older data-center GPUs can actually make money renting out AI compute in 2026. The Tesla V100 launched back in 2017, but with 16GB of HBM2 memory and a relatively low used-market price, I wanted to see if these old GPUs could still compete in today's AI GPU rental market. In this video, I install eight Tesla V100 16GB GPUs into my Gigabyte GPU server, upgrade the system with dual Intel Xeon Gold 6152 CPUs, 256GB of DDR4 ECC RAM, and Samsung NVMe storage. I then attempt to install Vast.ai and get the server verified and ready for GPU rentals. Unfortunately, things don't go exactly as planned. The Vast.ai installation fails during the PyTorch/CUDA testing process because of compatibility issues with the older Tesla V100 GPUs. I also run into NVIDIA driver compatibility problems and discover that I can't simply use the newest driver. After some troubleshooting, I find a potential workaround: temporarily installing an RTX 3080 to get the machine through the Vast.ai verification process before swapping the Tesla V100 GPUs back into the server. Now the big question is whether this 8× Tesla V100 GPU server can actually get rented on Vast.ai and generate enough revenue to justify the cost of the hardware, electricity, and time spent building it.
