North Carolina Nonprofit Loses Nearly $1,000,000 to Fake IT Purchases by Former Administrator

A former IT administrator at a North Carolina nonprofit healthcare provider has received a lengthy prison sentence after systematically stealing more than $941,000 through fraudulent equipment purchases.

Robin Corey Rix was convicted of four counts of obtaining property by false pretenses involving more than $100,000 and one count of embezzlement of funds by public officers and trustees, reports Goldsboro Daily.

Authorities say Rix worked as a senior systems administrator at 3HC Home Health and Hospice Care from 2020 to 2023 and used the company’s credit card to submit fake invoices for refurbished laptops and other gear while routing charges through PayPal accounts he controlled. Instead of buying the IT equipment, Rix diverted the funds to personal uses such as vehicle and home payments, dining out, online gaming and travel to Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

Authorities also say Rix created a fictitious company to mask the transactions as legitimate business expenses.
