UBS reported a sharp increase in its Bitcoin ETF call exposure during the second quarter, according to a Form 13F filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on August 13. The filing shows a major shift toward options despite only modest growth in direct IBIT holdings.

UBS held 407,890 shares of BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) at June 30, up 11.9% from March. However, calls representing about 1.95 million underlying IBIT shares jumped from 80,000, while reported puts fell roughly 53%. The figures suggest substantially greater derivatives exposure to Bitcoin through the spot ETF, although they do not reveal UBS’s complete options book.

The key figure to watch is the continued institutional use of regulated Bitcoin products. UBS’s filing indicates that sophisticated market participants are increasingly combining spot ETF exposure with options, potentially giving institutions more flexible ways to position around Bitcoin’s price movements.
