Metaplanet Shuts Down Bitcoin Sale Rumours After Giant Wallet Transfer Spotted Onchain

TLDR

  • Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich confirmed the company moved 5,014 BTC ($322M) between its own custodial addresses, not a sale
  • Total Bitcoin holdings remain at 43,000 BTC following the transfers
  • Moving $322 million in Bitcoin cost Metaplanet roughly $8 in network fees
  • Metaplanet is the third-largest public Bitcoin treasury company globally, behind Strategy and Twenty One Capital
  • The company is targeting 100,000 BTC by end of 2026 and 210,000 BTC by end of 2027

Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich stepped in on August 13 to shut down speculation that the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company had sold a large chunk of its holdings.

โ€œThis was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC,โ€ Gerovich said.

The statement came after onchain trackers spotted large wallet movements tied to Metaplanet over a 24-hour period. Lookonchain flagged 3,881 BTC leaving wallets linked to the company, valued at around $247 million at the time.
