Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Commits $500,000,000 to Source Foundry Chip Startup

Situational Awareness is pouring $500 million into Source Foundry, a startup developing new equipment to ease bottlenecks in advanced semiconductor manufacturing.
The hedge fund injected a fresh $400 million into the company this week, in addition to its prior commitments, reports The Wall Street Journal.
A spokesperson for Situational Awareness did not respond to a request for comment.
Source Foundry launched last year with Stanford researchers Abdulmalik Obaid and Joe Burg at the helm and recently closed a funding round at a $5 billion valuation.
The company targets extreme ultraviolet lithography tools, currently dominated by the Netherlands-based ASML, to speed up and lower costs for producing AI accelerators amid surging demand.
Says Stephanie Zhan, a partner at Sequoia,
“If you trace the AI supply chain upstream, from models to chips to the machines that manufacture them, each layer becomes increasingly critical and constrained. Source Foundry tackles the tightest bottleneck: tooling for semiconductor manufacturing, starting in lithography.”
