Is Samsung’s $72B payout a vote of confidence in AI?

Samsung Electronics is reportedly planning to give back more than 100 trillion won, which is about $71.75 billion, to investors through its new payout program, which shows the electronics giant believes that the demand for AI products will remain high. In order for the plan to be approved, it will be presented at a board meeting taking place at the end of August. The payout plan includes a special dividend that will be paid out of half of the firm’s available cash.
Even though it is unclear to investors whether there is an AI spending bubble or not, one thing is true: the scale matters beyond the dividend. Memory is important for any AI server, and the fact that a player like Samsung chooses to return billions of dollars rather than keeping its money in store can be interpreted as a sign of its confidence in the sustainability of today’s earnings.
Why the payout answers an investor’s complaint
Samsung and SK Hynix have been slammed for being tight-lipped about their respective approaches to shareholder returns, even as they have been raking in record profits driven by AI. By the end of this year, the two companies are expected to amass a total of around $263 billion in cash on hand, based on the analysis of LSEG and Reuters data — which is more than twice as much as Nvidia’s estimated cash reserves of approximately $102 billion.
