Twitch defaults Amazon AI training on, buries opt-out in security settings

Twitch has begun sending creator streams to generative AI models built by its parent company Amazon. All channels are opt-in automatically.

If anyone wants to opt out, they have to go through account settings to turn it off.

Twitch’s product chief admits nobody would opt-in

Head of Community Mary Kish and Chief Product Officer Mike Minton answered questions from about 3,000 viewers on the platform’s official channel. And many spammed the chat with anti-AI messages.

When asked why the feature isn’t opt-in, Minton replied, “If this was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That’s honestly the answer.”

Creators are streaming their faces and voices for hours every week. Those recordings provide Amazon with a deep library of audio and video to train on.

Creators weren’t sure if their work had already gone to Amazon with the soft framing. One viewer asked Minton whether Amazon had used their videos.

“I don’t actually know the answer to that question because I don’t know what Amazon has done in terms of model training and what they’ve used and not used,” he said.
