UK Regulators Pushing Digital Finance, Readying Tokenized Gold

Regulators in the United Kingdom are looking to push the UK into the world of digital finance through blockchain and tokenization. According to Monday reports, the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) wants financial firms to use blockchain technology to make the trading and settlement clearing and custody of financial assets faster, more efficient, and secure.

The regulatory initiative comes as Shanghai and Hong Kong are seeking to establish themselves as major international bullion centres, which could threaten London’s grip on global gold trading and volume. The United States has also begun taking on the world of tokenization and changing the landscape of traditional finance. However, the UK has long limited itself in these ventures post-MiCA compliance.

In addition to encouraging companies to use blockchain, the UK is also preparing a framework for tokenized gold as it pushes to digitize financial markets. London’s over-the-counter (OTC) market has historically ranked as the number one center for gold trade and currently accounts for 70% of the world’s notional trading volume, according to the World Gold Council. However, London’s dominance is being increasingly challenged by China. As a result, the country is looking towards tokenization as a way to retain that dominance in the precious metals market.
