Crypto Investment Products Compared: ETPs vs ETFs vs Trusts - What Really Matters

The label on a listed product’s fact sheet does not determine its financial behavior. Over the past decade, the crypto investment industry has built a vocabulary that blends terms from traditional markets with local regulatory adaptations. The result is a landscape where ETP, ETF, and Trust coexist, often used as commercial synonyms, yet carrying radically different implications for the holder of the shares. An investor who allocates capital based on the wrapper’s name without analyzing the internal mechanics is taking on uncompensated risk.
An ETP (Exchange-Traded Product) constitutes the broadest category. It includes open-ended exchange-traded funds, tradeable debt notes, and hybrid vehicles. In Europe, numerous physically-backed bitcoin products are registered as ETPs with segregated collateral, a debt-security structure that isolates underlying assets from the issuer’s balance sheet. The same expression, in another context, can refer to an ETN (Exchange-Traded Note), where the holder assumes uncollateralized credit risk toward a bank. Grouping both realities under a single acronym is a transparency failure the industry has not resolved.
