India & Indonesia in Final Stages To Link Local Currency Payments

India and Indonesia put forward a new payment mechanism in 2024 and are now in the final stages of implementation. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that the central banks of both nations are in the final stages of linking India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Indonesia’s Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) for business settlements. The payments will be made in local currencies, the Indian rupee and the Indonesian rupiah.
Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty said that both nations have fast-tracked the INR-IDR operations for launch. He revealed that the local currency settlements for exporters and importers will be launched by the end of 2026. The development will protect the countries from the volatility and control of the US dollar. It will also allow them to break the reins of the US dollar and step up transactions in local currencies. Bilateral trade between India and Indonesia is worth more than $28 billion, according to data from the Ministry of External Affairs.
