A new era of transparency in the chocolate supply chain
The chocolate industry is preparing for a profound transformation. Three innovation leaders – Merck, PwC Germany and The Hashgraph Group – have launched a pilot project that aims to revolutionize cocoa traceability through an integrated solution based on the Hedera blockchain. The initiative emerged as a response to increasing legal pressure, especially in light of the strict regulations that the European Union will introduce from 30 December 2026, which will force companies to prove the origin of cocoa with precise data and foresee fines of up to 4% of annual turnover.
The transparency challenge in the cocoa supply chain
The cocoa supply chain is notoriously complex: more than two million African farms sell their products through a tangled network of intermediaries. By the time cocoa reaches the shelves, tracing it back to its source is almost impossible. This opacity encourages phenomena such as child labor, deforestation and smuggling. The new European legislation, however, imposes the requirement for end-to-end traceability and verifiable data.
