He argues that the June memorandum did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz in any meaningful sense, that Iran still controls passage, and that insurers are signaling this more honestly than official statements. He points to the drone strike on the Singapore flagged cargo ship Ever Lovely, the overnight US strikes on four Iranian missile, drone, and radar sites, and the IRGC claim that it retaliated against Al Udeid in Qatar, Ali Al-Salem in Kuwait, Al Dhafra in the UAE, and the Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain. He says that is not a real ceasefire, and warns that Oman is already telling European diplomats there will be no return to the pre war status quo in a waterway that carries roughly one fifth of the world’s seaborne oil and LNG trade. Macgregor says the US Navy has discovered the hard way that if it cannot operate within 100, 200, 300, or 400 miles of the coastline, it cannot produce decisive effects, and he calls the old model of projecting power into the Gulf obsolete.
