China Business Journal Sounds Alarm on Bitcoin Extortion Attempts by Impersonators
China Business Journal said that unidentified individuals had impersonated the publication in emails sent to companies, falsely claiming undercover investigations had uncovered damaging information. The messages demanded Bitcoin to prevent publication, turning the newspaper’s name into leverage for an alleged extortion scheme.
The publication said the emails came from addresses outside its official corporate system and were not authorized. It stressed that reporting and source contact follow legal requirements and official channels, while Bitcoin payment demands were a clear warning sign of impersonation rather than legitimate journalistic outreach.
China Business Journal said it is monitoring the incidents, collecting evidence and reserving the right to pursue civil and criminal liability. Companies receiving similar messages were advised not to transfer funds, to preserve all evidence and report the matter to local police, making rapid verification and evidence retention the immediate defensive response.
