A North Carolina woman lost nearly $6,000 after scammers allegedly impersonated her credit union and convinced her to hand over access to her bank account.
Durham resident Mindy Songer said she received a call that appeared to come from State Employees’ Credit Union, leading her to believe she was speaking with legitimate bank representatives, reports ABC 11.
The caller told Songer that someone had accessed her account and was attempting to steal $3,000. Believing she was helping the credit union stop the fraud, Songer provided her account login information.
She soon discovered that the supposed bank representatives were actually scammers.
Songer said the fraudsters used the information she provided to move money from her bank account into her Cash App account, which was connected to the bank account. The money was then transferred to accounts controlled by the scammers.
“They ended up taking $5,900. This is fraud. I want my money back.”
Songer said she initially believed the bank had stopped the attempted theft after the institution flagged the suspicious activity. She later learned that the scammers had successfully taken nearly $6,000.
