Judge Orders Kalshi to Shut Most Washington Operations

A King County Superior Court judge issued a final injunction order requiring Kalshi to stop offering, accepting or facilitating most wagers in Washington, the state Attorney General’s Office said August 13. The restrictions cover sports, elections, politics, entertainment, culture, technology, science and “mentions,” making a broad shutdown of event-contract activity the immediate consequence of the court’s preliminary findings.

The order follows a July ruling that Kalshi likely violated Washington’s Gambling Act and Consumer Protection Act by operating an illegal gambling platform in the state. Kalshi must also stop advertising the restricted products and implement IP- and residency-based geofencing by August 19, followed by a multi-source geofencing system by September 2.

The injunction does not cover every contract Kalshi offers, and the underlying litigation continues. Washington’s Court of Appeals denied Kalshi’s request to stay the injunction, leaving the restrictions in force while the case proceeds. The next test is whether Kalshi can narrow or overturn the order on appeal while meeting the new compliance deadlines.
